Family members said Farris had struggled with mental illness in the past two years and been diagnosed with bipolar disorder but had improved with medication." Coroner ruled the death due to dehydration with a contributing factor of malnutrition. He had been "awaiting a mental health evaluation to determine if he could assist in his defense.
Family's lawyer, Kathy Goater, said there would be a lawsuit. WA state sheriff apologized for the death; the jail's chief deputy was suspended for 30 days without pay; another staff member was put on paid leave and two resigned. Two former jail guards were later sentenced.
